24-Year-Old Man Drowns In Capital District Lake

A 24-year-old man has died after apparently drowning in a lake in the region.

Emergency crews in Columbia County were called Saturday, Aug. 13, with reports of a swimmer in distress at Lake Taghkanic State Park.

Witnesses told authorities a man had jumped from a boat and did not resurface, according to New York State Police.

Multiple agencies joined in the search, including State Park Police, State Forest Rangers, and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

A dive team finally located the man’s body underwater after nearly four hours, police said.

He was identified as Juan Chauca Remachi, age 24, of Flushing. An official cause of death will come from the Columbia County Coroner’s Office. 

"We will always remember you as a good cheerful and funny person who always brought us a smile to all," Shirley Guadalupe wrote in a Facebook post announcing his death.

"We will always carry you in our hearts cousin."
